Default (Vegas) horrible distortion after any rendering

I've been trying to render video with Sony Vegas 9 and no matter what codec or settings I choose, I get a horrible distortion effect seen here.

This is a screenshot from a Guildwars game video I was playing around with while trying to fix the issue.

As you can see there is significant ghosting and these very prominent horizontal bars.

I've tried everything and looked everywhere, I cannot find an answer to this problem.

If you have any possible solutions, I'd greatly appreciate them.

What's the format of the source video?

If in doubt, download GSpot (it's free) and open the source video with that. It'll tell us pretty much everything we need to know about it.

Are you getting this problem in the Preview pane or just when rendered?

    Looks like interlacing artifacts.

How are you getting the footage out of the game? FRAPS, or similar?

You might need to change your project settings to progressive, if you are. File>properties>field order>(none progressive scan). Also make sure your render settings are progressive too.

If you're capturing by some other means, say with a TV card, then you might need to set the deinterlacing method to "interpolate fields".

The format is AVI, I see no distortion in the preview window, but it's somewhat hard to tell with the low quality of the preview.

It is Fraps, yes, but the same happens when I attempt to render clips from otherwise perfectly fine TV show AVIs.

I shall try using the progressive settings as you suggested.

Be sure to select the correct framerate too, or Vegas will blend the frames and it looks horrible.

Thank you ever so much, this seems to have completely fixed the problem, though i will need to fiddle with the options a little to boost the image quality.

    Ah, the nightmare is over.
