    Default Motion Tracking Help

    Hey all,

I have started a project that needs some motion tracking done.

I have been successful with motion tracks in other projects, but for the life of me can't figure out why this one is having problems.

I have my footage. (1920x1080 24p .mov exported from Final Cut with the Prores HQ codec) in a comp that matches inside AE.
I go to animation - track motion.
I select rotation as well so that position and rotation are checked.
I select the two areas for my track points.
I analyze/track 1 frame at a type and it tracks perfectly, exactly how I want it so I press the play button, or analyze all automatically and once again it tracks perfectly.
    No problems yet.

In other words I can visually see that my motion tracking data is perfect, it follows the area I chose exactly.

My problem is when I make a null object, go to edit target and select the null object, hit apply. and then scroll through my footage keeping an eye on the null object (square box), it suddenly isn't together with the area I chose. It no longer follows my tracking data. It does track and move around in the general area, but it is completely wrong and obviously not the same as my original tracking data.

I went on anyways. I created a line of text and Alt + click on the timewatch on the position and attached it with the pick thing to the position of the null object. I did the same to the rotation.

When scrolling through the footage, the next follows the null objects motion perfectly!! which is good news in a way, but my null object was off my original tracking data for some reason.

Anyone have any ideas? I have tried not using a null object, as well as using a null object and just parenting the text layer to the null layer instead of Alt + clicking on the position and rotation, but the end result is the same....

    Thanks!!!

I'm on an 8core Mac pro running 10.5.8 with CS4. 10 gigs of ram. plenty of harddrive space. No issues with lag or playback.

I can't remember how it works; but in case some vital point is missed; I recommend re-reading:

Adobe After Effects CS4 * Motion tracking workflow

Perhaps after doing the Tracking, is it possible to select all the keyframes from the appropriate part of the 'Motion Trackers'; and then paste them into the 'position' of your Null? No need for Parenting. Perhaps!

That's an idea! I'll give that a try.

I'll read over your link as well.

Thanks for understanding exactly what I was having trouble with! haha

    Anyone else?

I tried to copy the motion tracking keyframes any pasting them onto my text layer instead of parenting it to the null, but i could not paste anything because the keyframes that the motion tracker makes aren't the same. They can't be pasted. There is no position keyframes or rotation keyframes in the motion tracker layer.

    hmm...

    ANyone else?

I can't offer any definite solution and I'm sure that you know more about motion tracking than I do but have a look at the motion tracking tutorial at:
VIDEO COPILOT | After Effects Tutorials, Plug-ins and Stock Footage for Post Production Professionals

It's free, nothing to download, and I find their online tutorials really helpful.
