Thread: File size increases

    Default File size increases

Edited an AVI from 20 min to 16 min and the output file (mpeg) size increased 4x. Also converted an AVI to mpeg-SVCD ext. and same thing happened. Why?

It depends on how the AVI was encoded. My guess is that it was an MPEG4 codec, which give better quality for any given bitrate. To get the same quality from MPEG4 on MPEG1 or 2, you'll need to increase the bitrate and therefore the size of your file!

How many minutes can you usually fit on a SVCD if you have an mpeg 1 or mpeg 2 file? Seems less than 40 minutes or so. Can you fit more if you use a DVD burner? I'm using a CD-RW to try and create SVCD.

SVCD uses MPEG2 and yes, you can't really fit much on there. If you've got a DVD burner, you can fit 1 hour of "maximum" quality DVD video on a single layer DVD and greater than 1 hour by reducing the avreage bitrate, and/or using compressed audio.

If you don't have a DVD burner, check out the KVCD templates which let you burn > 1 hour of video to be played in a DVD player on a CDR.
