Thread: pan/crop problem

    Default pan/crop problem

So I've been looking around for a while for a solution for this problem but without any results since I basically don't know what to search for since I don't really know how to describe my problem accurately.

But let's say I have some video clip in my project and I want a cutout of this clip enlarged and moved around. (Note: I know that in pan/crop I can zoom in on the clip but the clip is still the same size as the project, I want that clip zoomed in on AND scaled down so it doesn't fill out the frame.)

Imagine it as if you disable Stretch to fill frame so that you can crop out a section of a clip AND THEN manipulate that section of a clip with zoom, placement, etc...

Hope you understand what I'm trying to do here, thanx in advance :P

I think what you are looking for is the cookie cutter tool. You can choose a shape and use it to cut out a section of the video. You can then move it around and place it where you want.

Cookie cutter might do the job, but is limited.

I think what you really need to get to grips with is track motion.

So with track motion you can just take a section of the clip and size it and move it around ?

I've never used it as anything I've needed I could do easily with the Pan/Crop tool.

When you use the pan/crop tool, hold down ctrl.

Yes - well with a combination. To clarify:

Suppose you've got two cameras - one showing a performer and another showing a person's reaction.
You want to do a PIP (Picture in Picture) with the reaction shot in a window, say upper left, but the person who is reacting is centred in the frame.
Use Pan and Crop to select just the face of the person reacting (turn OFF stretch to fill frame).
This will crop the reaction shot, but it will be in te center of the frame.
Use track motion to move it to the upper left.

Say you have 10 or 30 Events, you'd have to Pan/Crop ALL, and ALL equally ( Notwithstanding Paste Event Atrib). Track motion for this, far easier.

I can see how Track motion would be better for certain uses. I do remember I did use it once when I was blanking out a number plat. I used the cookie tool to select the area and the track motion to to follow the car as it moved. Is that the right way to use it ?
