Thread: Converting a WMV file

  1. Default Converting a WMV file

I have a number of photo slide shows created with Photo Story 3 for Windows. The slide shows are created as .WMV files but they won't play in the Xtreamer. Photo Story has been around a while (I think no longer supported by MS) so it's probably an old version of WMV, not the WMV9 that Xtreamer claims to support. However I quite like the pan/zoom transitions in Photo Story (a bit like I-Photo for the Mac), so would like to keep this.

After a bit of googling I found this How to Convert WMV to AVI: 9 steps - wikiHow describing how to use Windows Movie Maker to convert a WMV into an AVI file, which I've done, and the resultant AVI plays fine with Windows Media Player and VLC, however the file is over 3.1Gb, compared to the 120Mb of the WMV file.

Fine, so I thought I'd compress the AVI into MPEG-4 or h-264 using Handbrake, which I've used for similar things in the past. However Handbrake just fails after a minute or so (with one those "do you want to report this error...." type messages).

The AVI file info is as follows (as reported by MediaInfo):

    Complete name : D:\_Data\Pictures\Temp\Bath_0001.avi
    Format : AVI
    Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
    Format profile : OpenDML
    File size : 2.99 GiB
    Duration : 14mn 49s
Overall bit rate : 28.9 Mbps

    ID : 0
    Format : Digital Video
    Duration : 14mn 49s
    Bit rate mode : Constant
    Bit rate : 24.4 Mbps
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 576 pixels
    Display aspect ratio : 4:3
    Frame rate mode : Constant
    Frame rate : 25.000 fps
    Standard : PAL
    Resolution : 8 bits
    Colorimetry : 4:2:0
    Scan type : Interlaced
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 2.357
    Stream size : 2.98 GiB (100%)

    ID : 0-0
    Format : PCM
    Muxing mode : DV
Muxing mode, more info : Muxed in Video #1
    Duration : 14mn 49s
    Bit rate mode : Constant
    Bit rate : 1 536 Kbps
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
    Resolution : 16 bits
    Stream size : 0.00 Byte (0%)

Anyone any ideas why Handbrake is failing, or what approach I could try to either compress the AVI file or convert the WMV file into something I can play on the Xtreamer? I've tried imprting the AVI file into my video editor (Pinnacle) but that refuses to load it)

    Thanks, David

AVI files are uncompressed unlike WMV

you could try Format factory or Super C to convert and see if you have better luck

Well Format Factory read the file, was very slow, still produced a much bigger file than the original WMV, and produced orrible result - full of artifacts on the slide transitions. Totally unwatchable

VideoChargeStudio - yeah, I'm likely to pay $100 (probably more when converted to UKP) for something I'll only use a few times a year.

I'll have a look at Super C next.

    Thanks for the replies.

In format factory , you have to set the quality bit rate to your preferences.

As i said in my last post WMV is a compressed format and so will be smaller then an AVI which is uncompressed
