Default effect in the middle of movie?

i'm using adobe after effects, and if I want to activate effect (e.g. echo) on e.g. 3:15 - 3:45, and not before or after that time, just during those 30 seconds, how do I do it? Maybe something with keyframes?
So far I have tried, but every effect activates from beginning of the movie till the end.

As far as I know, the effect can eb applied to specific parts of a movie. You should check the keyframes documentation in After Effects.

Yup, have a quick read in the manual about keyframes. The topic's too big to post here. Using AE without understanding keyframes is like driving a car in reverse all the time.

My friedns are quite right. Keyframing will be your answer and you will get NOWHERE in AE without knowing how to do them. But the quicklest way I can think of for doing this without keyframes is as follows.

Duplicate you layer. Trim the top one so you just have the bit you want the effect on. Drop the effect on it.
