Thread: 1 min video = 1GB? How Can I Reduce file size when exporting from tape?

  1. Default 1 min video = 1GB? Reduce file size when exporting from tape?

When exporting a full 60 minute mini tape out, my file size can easily get to about 70GB. That is more space than 1 minute for 1 tape

Currently using Premiere Pro CS4. I also do have Edius 5. Using a Panasonic NV-GS35 tape Video Recorder. I'm exporting with USB 2.0 since for some weird reason my firewire wont work.

How can I reduce the file size when exporting from tape? I don't mind a little quality loss.

When transferring from a DV camera, which should preferably be via Firewire, you are transferring the 'raw' files which are easily editable. The idea is that you work with these files whilst editing, and then encode to a 'delivery' format on export. These compress the video using 'lossy' compression, which loses information, whilst maintaining perceived quality. For example DVDs use MPEG2 compression, and Blu Ray a form of MPEG4.

To reduce file sizes, bring the video into Premiere Pro, and then export using the Adobe Media Encoder.
