Default 16:10 vs 16:9 displays, which do you prefer?

Hey guys, first post hopefully of many

I'm looking to upgrade from my ancient 17" LCD to something a little better suited to working with full HD content, and was wondering which, out of these two, you would go for yourselves: a 22" 16:10 monitor with 1680x1050 maximum res, or a 23" 16:9 monitor at 1920x1080?

So, higher res with a wider aspect ratio, or lower res but with more vertical space? Obviously the 16:9 would seem to be the best option as it matches the content perfectly, but when actually working within the NLE, would those missing vertical pixels be a hindrance?

Any opinions you could give will be much appreciated, and obviously I do understand that this sort of thing can be pretty subjective. Thanks!

    16:9 no contest.

Why limit yourself with less resolution and (more importantly) a monitor which doesn't show your aspect ratio?

I know it probably sounds like a no-brainer; I guess my real question is whether the 16:9 aspect ratio would be more or less productive than 16:10 in a video editing context. If both monitors were the same size but one displayed 1920x1200 and the other 1920x1080, would you still go for the 16:9? Thanks for the verification, just wanted to make sure before putting my money down

There is no contest, as high definition is 1920 x 1080, so it has to be the 23" 16:9 monitor.

I bought a 16:10 monitor a few months ago and the picture quality was just not worth it to save a few pounds.

it had low res on it and 6 pixels are cut of the right hand side.

getting a monitor with a standard aspect ratio is deffinatly the best way to go without a doubt and the higher the res, the better the picture will be. I still miss my big crt monitors though.

Sorry Smifis, just to clarify, would you be looking at the 23" 16:9 or the 22" 16:10? Given that 16:10 is technically the "standard ratio" when it comes to monitors, whereas the 16:9 has the higher res... Thanks for all your help, keep the replies coming!

If you're working with video then 16:9, as Nikosony and I have said.

I thought the two standard ratios where 4:3 and 16:9. When did 16:10 become a standard ratio?

Thankyou, sorry I just wanted to clarify what you meant. And Nikosony, although 16:9 (1920x1080) is standard ratio for HD, most all "widescreen" monitors are actually 16:10 (1920x1200, 1680x1050, 1280x720, etc). That's why I was wondering whether the lost pixels would be either a help or a hindrance, as it's not strictly speaking the norm.

The Higher the res ther better and 16:10 is just a marketting gimmic to say "look, it's a little bit taller!".

Something else to consider is Contrast ratio. which monitor has the best contrast ratio?
