Default Needed: Idiot's guide to file types

Could someone point me in the direction to a beginner's guide to file types... avi, mvw, sfv, flv etc etc. What does it all mean and why do certain files play beautifully on one computer/dvd/webpage and not on another? A web site that lists and explains the properties and uses of each one would be so helpful if anyone knows of one... many thanks, Anna (A frustrated beginner!)
