Default Hd 1080 quality and editing format issues?

Hi, I am a newbie in filmaking. I have just recently completed shooting a documentary with a digital Sony HVR 1AE in HD format recording in mini dv tapes. I now need to transfer these mini dv tapes via a deck to my Mac hard drive. Now my problem is that I don't own any software to use except from imovie 08 that comes with my labtop. I also don't want to lose quality. As far as I understood using imovie 08 means I need to compress the footage and then downgrade in quality?. If this is correct I need a software or format that will allow me to download the mini dv footage into my hard drive and be able to view it only without having to compress. I will later go on to edit it in a professional editing suite. Any advise on how to go on is highly appreciated.

    thanks in advance

Imovie - as with nearly all editors, can capture HDV video faithfully.

That is without having to compress the footage?
Would you also know what capacity will an hour of uncompressed footage occupy in my hard drive?
    Thanks for your reply Mark

Well, I am specualting but I would be stunned if i was wrong as imovie is also titled HD.

Video can be in a variety of wrappers - .mov .avi .mxf and more. Various video data using various codecs can be in them.

I suspect imovie captures to mov but there is no reason why this wouldnt be a copy of the camera data.

Capturing does just that only as a rule unless you specify otherwise.

Note that HDV is very compressed already, about 25 to one.

The data rate is the same as DV - 25mbit / sec, about 3.5mbyte per second. I will leave you to do the maths.
