    Default mini dvd tape maintenance

Camcorder Instruction books recommend that you rewind mini dvd tapes periodically. Until now I have assumed that this simply means fast forwarding and then rewinding the tapes once a year, but I now wonder if I should only be forwarding each tape only to the end before storing for a year after which I rewind it to the beginning. This latter method would help prevent any "print through" from one layer of tape to the other such as used to happen with audio tapes. That may not be a problem for mini dvd tapes - but I don't know. Your comments would be appreciated.

I've never done either and it's never made a difference.

That advice is fibble wibble and also hooharrr.

People do talk pants about tapes - use once only - is another piece of flaky ' law ' that goes around from time to time - that and ' keep your tapes under a pyramid made of art straws blessed by the Dali Llama'.

Tapes are well tough and seem immune to all the abuse and rough handling I dish out.

I even use the first 30s - many people avoid the first bit of tape - but i havent noticed much of an issue really.

Oh also a DV tape is a HDV tape is a.... Thats another common tape thing.

Print through ? Urban myth in digital world - only an issue ( and rarely even then ) with old old analogue audio tape.

The only thing I do is to stick to one brand.. diffrent brands use diffrent lube and it could gum up your camera

I think it depends on the camera too.. i've seen a camera get gummed up pretty bad.. since then i dont take the chance even if its remote

I did manage to break a tape once - well part of the brake mech failed and it just wouldnt move.
But that was a tape that was 4 years old and had been in constant use -rewind - use -rewind. It was an investigation to see how long a tape lasts.

    Answer - ages.

I think it likely broke cos the camera had a dodgy transport too.
