Question Just to clarify, you can't edit a video background without a green/blue screen?

Just to clarify, you can't edit a video background without a green/blue screen?

Also, can you use something like a green towel or a blue towel against a wall, or does it have to be the actual material?

Are there any ways to change the video background for free?

You can, but you'd have to manually edit each frame of video (aka rotoscoping)

See this short summary of the process: Digital Video Editing Guides: Digital Director - features - A Quickstart Guide to Blue Screening - Part One

Your user rank will change as you contribute more to the forums. Everyone starts out as 'Windows Movie Maker', then moves on to Standard Definition after 5 posts, HDTV after 20 and Video Editing Junkie after 50.

Go to your local department store and in the bedding section look for a king size (or largest size) you can get of a bed spread/sheet in blue (I have yet to see a green coloured one). Look for one that is about 6 feet long and about 5 feet wide or tall depending on how you look at it. That should be big enough for you to stand in front of. Keep it wrinkle free, light it evenly and don't let any shadows fall on it.
