Default Filmonik for Salford and Manchester Filmmakers

I'd never heard of this until my girlfriend pointed me towards it the other day.

    http://www.filmonik.com/kabaret.htm

I'd be interested to know if any one has done such a thing before and what they got out of it before I book a baby sitter for the week.

Taken from their web site and abbreviated...

'...a nine-day white knuckle ride of cinematic creation on the streets of Manchester and Salford.

...This is cinematic bootcamp. Over a week of flat out, peddle-to-the-metal 24/7 filmmaking, where fortune favours the brave, the quick-witted and the fast-working, where only the strong survive and the crazy obsessives flourish. If you’ve always dreamed of making “that little movie”, if only you had the time / talent / equipment, now is your chance to watch that dream crash and burn, and see something else come stumbling from the ashes

...we’ll provide the workspace and three separate screening venues. All you need to do is write your film, shoot your film, edit your film, and screen your film. In a week - or less. You’ll never have another opportunity like it.

...There’ll be access to equipment and talent, training for novices, opportunities galore for creative collaboration.'

I tht I slagged this on another thread - personal opinion only - looks terrible.
Looks to be the polar opposite of how a film should be made. Scripts expecially are like fine wine - old is better as a rule with numerous rewrites.

For £10 I'm doing it anyway. It should be good for making contacts and using equipment I'd not have a chance to otherwise. I hardly have the space for laptop at home never mind for a green screen and I don't know any one else who even owns a camcorder never mind in to film making.

I'd agree with you about the fine wine thing only with by doing this you get new skills... ie Dogma95 and erm... that's all I can think of for now.

A tenner? In that case I retract - I would do it in a flash - I cynically assumed it was some expensive thing.

Wasn't even a tenner in the end - only £8 and I got to direct, shoot and publicly screen my own film which I'll be posting as soon as it's uploaded to Youtube. Great bunch of people all very dedicated with a wide range of talent.

I've never had the chance to direct people before and had a great time doing it. Could have done without the deadline but then the ethos is to just get your idea down on film and get it screened.

About 40 of us made 30 short films over the week and people from other Filmonik cells travelled in from all over the world. If you ever hear of anything like it DO IT! I've learned so much...

    ...and missed so much sleep.
