    Default Basic question

I am looking to buy a DVD player capable of playing avi's. I see a few on Amazon which are compatible with DivX (Mpeg4). I am guessing these are not the same thing but I need clarification.

Divx is an encoder commonly used in compressed avi's. Avi's cannot be generalised because it is a container file which basically means it could be anything inside. if you download things from the internet it is likley to be encoded in divx (or xvid, exactly the same). if your not sure you can always run it through g-spot (no jokes please) (GSpot Codec Information Appliance)
