    Default XP Can't Find Camera

I've recently bought a second hand desk top PC and installed all the relevant software. However when it's time capture some film it won't find the camera.

The firewire drivers are installed and everything so it should really be a matter of connecting the cables, switching it on and the drivers either automatically installing or being prompted for the drivers but when I do... nothing.

I've had this problem before with wireless networking but that's another kettle of fish and I can't remember how I solved it.

    If it makes any difference...

    Dell Precision 470
    Windows XP Home Edition

    Any help appreciated!

Cheers Mark, I don't know why I didn't think of that!

It couldn't find the other cam either so I tried a USB connection and that didn't work so I've come to the conclusion the card is fried. It was quite old, cramming a cable in the wrong way around (it's possible and you don't need a hammer!) and leaving it lying around out the computer won't have helped either.

I've eBayed a new one so I'll probably be back with the same question in a few days time.

Nope, I've tried it with a new PCI firewire card which loaded it's own drivers. Tried both cameras again but it didn't recognise either of them. Any help appreciated!

So - seems it's unlikely to be the card or cameras - lead maybe ?

Are you not even getting a connection ' bing ' ?

I can't see this helping but it might, a few years ago when I went over to XP my Canon MV20 had problems I eventually fixed it by downloading a driver fix from Microsoft, "windowsxp-kb893008-x86-enu.exe" it seems Canon had written some sloppy code.

Your right Wandering-free it wasn't much help but thanks for trying. It seems like everywhere I ggogle this problem is common but all the fixes are out of date or just not applicable. I'm wondering if updating to Service Pack 3 has anything to with it.

I've just tried my old camera the MV20 on this new computer with sp3 with no driver fixes installed at all and it found it without any hesitation. In device manager does the firewire card show up as IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers, or could you have a faulty PCI slot.

I'm pretty sure it's not the PCI slot as it shows up in the Device Manager and you're going to think I'm stupid when I tell you my next reason...

Yesterday rather than using my trusty lap top (which I've always used for capturing without any problem) to test said leads or cameras, I reformatted the hard disc to get rid of a load of old files and then reinstalled windows.

Guess what! Yes, now my lap top can't find my camera. Like the desk top it will recognise the firewire card but not the cameras which leads me to 4 conclusions...

1 Both cameras are broken - unlikely that both have developed the same fault at the same time
2 Both leads are broken - as above
3 Both Firewire cards are broken - as number 1
4 There's something wrong with windows.

My money is on number 4.
