Default What to use for effects

I'm trying to figure out the best way to add some effects to a movie. I recently added some lightsaber effects to a short video but now I need to add effects of a laser gun. What options to I have to accomplish this? Thanks.

Did you rotoscope the lightsaber? That is still an option for the laser.

What s.w do you have available?

You must have compositted the work you did for the light sabres. What did you use for that? I'm sure it'll do an equally goodjob ro a laser burst. It's basically the same effect after all. The laser hit itself migth be a differen matter though.

I considered the same technique but it's difficult to do well because the beam needs to go straight and not look like it's jumping around, it's not like i have something to track like I did with the lightsaber dowel.

Here are some online tutorials, maybe one of them is what you are looking for.
They each have a little different effect, some are easy and some are not.

Does anybody have any experience with this? i honestly would prefer the rotoscoping method since I've gotten comfortable with it, but I'm still just worried because i want to make sure the beam is on a linear path and doesn't look choppy, which is what happened when I tried lightsaber effects when I didn't have the prop draw a line over.

Bit expensive - but as a rule it is best to do things for real rather than in post.

Dilithium may be hard to source.
