Default Bad lag in MS Moviemaker on fast PC

Thank you for any assistance you can offer me, this is my first post here...

I know MS Moviemaker is a low-end program and I intend to upgrade to Adobe 6.5 but meanwhile I have a problem. I am in the middle of editing about seven hours of home DV footage into about forty five minutes and find that the timeline playback of certain sequences of quick cuts lags so badly that I cannot fine-cut them with any precision.

It makes no sense to change programs mid-project, so is there anything I can do? I have a very fast PC and top-of-the-line vid card:

P4 2.8 GHz, Ati Radeon 9800, 1GB RAM, WinXP Pro, dedicated 80GB IBM HD for video only.

never used movie maker so can;t offer any s/w specific solutions. I would make sure the drive with the video clips on it is well defragged though.
