Thread: Can you recommend me a camcorder?

  1. Default Can you recommend me a camcorder?

    Hello,

I want to do professional video editing for fun and film a few small events around town. I have owned some really cheap camcorders before and I am looking for something that would be a decent price and have very sharp quality, sound and would just be good for video editing. I know there is thousands of them out there. What do you pros recommend I use?

" professional video editing for fun " - thats an oxymoron - doing professional work is rarely much fun.

It's impossible to get reliable recs loke this as people often just rec what they have.

I can however tell you waht NOT to get, unless you are a masochist.

Nothing that records to a hard drive - terrible to edit.
Nothing that records to card unless you spend 5000 - same as above and often very poor quality.

Make sure the camera you choose has a mic input too.

    Hi again,

Thank you for the information. What do you think about this camcorder?
    Camcorder Review: Canon HG10 AVCHD

It's around my price range, and seems good, I always liked Canons.

Indeed - I thought I was being blunt - even for me.

DO NOT BUY A CAMERA THAT RECORDS TO HARD DRIVE.

( unless you never want to edit the video )

I lothe reviews as they rarely help and post this for illustrative purposes

Why does everyone say hard drive camcorder footage is hard to edit ?
I've got 2 hard drive camcorders, a 2 year old sony dcr-sr90 and a new canon hg-10, none of them are hard to edit, none of them put a strain on my pc.
The picture from the canon hg-10 is excellent, i regularly use it as a 2nd cam to my EX1.

My pc is nothing special, just an off the shelf quad core with 4gb ram.

What exactly are the problems people have with AVCHD ?
I'm just speaking of my own experiences, i have no problems with AVCHD.
I just chuck it onto the vegas timeline, wait for the peaks to build and then i edit, no problems at all.
I render to mpeg-2 or whatever else i want and it looks ok.
    Maybe i'm just lucky.

Pk - with the greatest of respect you are not ' most ' filmmakers - you are very techo able and you are much better than most people at sorting the unsortable.

The number of posts to the forum by people who are having all sorts of problems added together exceeds all other problems combined.

I found the HG10 to be dissapointing in it's performance and the video it produced refused to work in many apps I tried it on.

The Canon HV-20 HDV is expensive. But it looks good. I was looking for the $700 - $800 range and this one is $1,069. But I am sure that it is better then any around that price range. I don't know what I should do.
