Default Frames dropped during DV capture to computer

I ussually have no problem capturing video from my Cannon Zr40 DV camera to my HP Pavilion running windows xp, 3.20ghz and 3.5 gigs of RAM.

Now when I try to capture, with adobe premiere pro 2, pinnacle studio 8, nero, or windv, almost all of my frames are dropped. I mean dropped frames to captured frames are almost the same.

I've tried capturing to my c drive, and my d drive, both internal hard drives. In both cases frames were dropped. I've defraged both drives, and there is plenty of free space on both drives.

What do you think my problem is?

If the video plays ok in the camera then blame pc / software.

What does the perf mon show as you capture? % cpu ?

    Default camera termperature problem

For me the problem was the camera. Putting the Sony Hanycam TVR310 in the refrigerator before reading videos in via firewire fixed the dropped frames problem.

Also, Windows has a bug, when there are a lot of dropped frames the Windows impore program does not free memory so the Windows program ended up using about a gigabyte of ram when it was dropping frames.

I had this problem a while back, all frames dropped during capture. Turned out to be my firewire card (which was a few years old). I happened to have a spare one, swapped it out and the problem went away. Your mileage may vary.
