Thread: New to camera work need help!

  1. Default New to camera work need help!

    Hey

I'm a media studies college student and need some advice.

I want to buy a camcorder for general filming of family, friends, weddings, barmitzfas etc etc...

I want to get mini dv, but don't have a firewire imput on my laptop. Is that bad?

I'm aiming for 400-500 mark to spend.

Plus, what editing software do I need?

    I've got Windows Movie Maker.

    Please help.

    Thanks.

I can't see anyone here arguing against that being the best possible choice.

You will need firewire. PCMCIA/CardBus adaptors for laptos are available.

If you really want useable manual controls consider a second hand Panasonic NV-GS400 - available for this sort of pricce on eBay from ime to time and superior to the later models. Can't comment on current new models at that price, but you'll get a much better quality standard def MiniDV than other formats for the same price.

WMM is as good a place to start as any. Pinnacle Studio is quite easy to get to grips with, but like many others I found it frustratingly unreliable. Adobe Premiere Elements is probably the most common starter package. I'd recommed Sony Vegas Movie Studio (cos it's what I moved up t before buying the grown-up version). It's available for a full 30 day trial from www.sonymediasoftware.com (and I thing Premiere Elements is too). Expect to waste you Christmas break experimenting with these things
