Default computer for mobile video editor

I am a novice director/editor. I use pinnacle studio v.11. I am currently using a hp pavilion dv2610us that I got from a friend, for some web/graphic design work.

Currently I am a self paying college student, so money is big issue for me. I am researching computers, and I would like some imput on specs for a computer.

I am looking into hp or apple. I would love an macbook or macbook pro but I can't afford anything from apple, at least until after college.

What camera will you be using - or what will be the source of your raw video?

Specifically the format of the video. Differnet formats need different levels of performance to be smooth to edit.

Laptops are compromised as they sacrifce speed for compactness and low power consumption. Spec for spec a lap top is twice as pricey and half as fast. Ish.

Should be cool to edit on a lappy so long as you dont use processor heavy fx.
    Dual core min advised.

ANd I cant see how the os helps you edit - so long as it is stable. If anyone says XP crashes I am gonna explode. lols.
