Thread: Matrox Boards

    Default Matrox Boards

    Hi,

I have been thinking about stepping up my system with a Matrox Board RTS2 as I heard they are very good for running Adobe CS3. Just wondering what exactly they do as i cant seem to get a definitive technical answer.

If anyone knows I'd greatly appreciate the advice

I suspect that in this age of SSE4 vector like instructions and multiple cores the rational for bespoke accelerator cards may not be so clear.

A couple of regulars have or do use them i think - hopefully they will provide better info.

Just curious but if you don't know what they do then why are you actually thinking about buying one?

Or maybe you could have just phrased your question betterer!!!

Ha, that is a fair point!

Well when I was at Uni all the CS3 computers had Matrox cards and the engineers used to swear by them.

I am looking at speeding up render and export times and improving the export quality and speed. I thought a matrox board could do that sort of thing, as well as improving the playback of the video? I could be well off the mark as i am a little unsure.

But I dont really know how or what else exactly the card does, apart from give you nice a nice choice of input output connectors and give you some fancy built in effects

I have a Matrox RT.X100 real time render card going begging if you want to make me an offer. Comes with Premeire Pro 1.5, Audition 1.5 and Encore DVD 1.5 if you're quick - might have a buyer for some of the s/w.

be warned though, it is fussy about sitting with compatible h/w so check the lists at Matrox before you tell me you want it.

Thankyou for the offer but i dont think it will work correctly on my OS as i have Vista. Looking on the site it has got a lot about XP but not Vista, I haven't had a lot of luck when it comes to installing pre vista stuff on vista. Like Premiere Pro 2.0!

    Cheers for the offer anyhow

    Hello Sparkie,

Here’s what you can expect from the RTX2 when editing in HD (High def.) or SD (Standard def.):

The first thing you have to think of when it comes to Matrox’s video editing products, is “realtime”. It means realtime when exporting, realtime when editing with many layers of video (native HDV, DV, Sony XDCAM EX, and Panasonic P2 720p and SD) with different effects applied. For example, you are editing a project with Premiere and you want a colored video clip to be turned into a black and white clip, with a film effect (grains added, jittering effect, soft borders) to give this clip an old photographic look. Well, you can all do it in realtime. It means your computer won’t have to do any rendering or less than it would normally do (rendering is a process that means time wasted waiting – especially when you have a long editing job to do)

The second thing you have to think of is output on a professional monitor or a TV. It means output from your timeline while you’re editing, output from After Effect’s timeline, output when you’re typing a title that goes over a clip in the video you’re editing with Premiere. It means you can actually see how your video will look like on a TV, thus you can do professional color correction (if you have professional monitor), use the title safe borders to place your titles correctly and see many pictures defaults you would not be able to see on your computer’s monitor.

You also have to know (info taken from Matrox’s Website) that the Matrox RT.X2 platforms go far beyond the capabilities of software-only editing and systems that combine Adobe Premiere Pro and a simple I/O card.
The additional benefits you get with Matrox RT.X2 include:

    • Many more realtime layers of video and graphics
    • More effects in real time including color correction, chroma/luma keying, speed changes, blur/glow/soft focus, 3D DVE and much more
    • Extensive camera support with Matrox RT.X2 and RT.X2 LE including many new models from Canon, JVC, Panasonic, and Sony
    • Realtime native editing of Sony XDCAM EX .mp4 clips with RT.X2 and RT.X2 LE
    • Realtime native editing of Panasonic P2 MXF 720p and SD files with Matrox RT.X2 and RT.X2 LE
    • Realtime capture from analog sources to compressed MPEG-2 4:2:2 I-frame
    • Realtime playback of 32-bit MPEG-2 I-frame AVI files with alpha
    • Realtime mixed-format multi-cam
    • Realtime MPEG-2 IBP capture from analog and DV sources for DVD authoring
    • Accelerated export to Blu-ray, DVD, all multimedia formats including Flash Video, and Adobe Clip Notes
    • Composite, Y/C, and analog component input and output
    • WYSIWYG video output for motion graphics, animation, and compositing applications
    • Audio VU meters on capture
    • Full-resolution HD monitoring on an inexpensive flat panel display via independent DVI output with Matrox RT.X2

The RTX2 is aimed at corporate communicators, event videographers, project studios, educational facilities and digital filmmakers.

I would invite you to visit the realtime editing engine section of Matrox’s Website in order to get more information about the RTX2. There you’ll find a product guide, a datasheet for Matrox RTX2, a RTX2 VS editing with Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 only, and some info concerning the performance of the card. You’ll also find information concerning scalable system design, so you can build your computer accordingly to Matrox’s system recommendations.

    Hope this helps.

Realtime editing - now what exactly does that mean - do some editirs work in imaginary time? Clever cos that is just a hypothetical construct to make quantum dynamics work with general relativity...
