Default Please, help me with a microphone

I am now the proud ownder of a canon xm2 as of today.

I am well aware that I am going to need to buy, among other things, a better external mic. My question is which one? I have about a 200 budget, so probably one that fits to the hotshoe. Or I can buy the mic mount and a cheaper mic?

Please can someone point me in the right direction? Are the canon DM50 and DM100 compatible? Are they any good or should I bee looking at something different.

I have searched for more info on this but can't find any thing advising specifically advising for xm2. I am going to be filming weddings/events.

    Many thanks

    Caline

Yeah, nevermind. Just feel overwhelmed when I start looking as theres so much to choose from, and I always prefer to go on recommendations rather than just guessing.

Oh well. Maybe someone will post some words of wisdom.

    Thanks

Rode microphones get the odd good write, up but the NTG2 I had was fine but did not like disco music, it would distort at the head end.

Peronally I think the mic that rode make that people rec - the video mic - 70 quid - is a piece of crap. Avoid.

Maybe, if you asked this question in the sound forum... Oh, you've posted the identical question there as well.

Okay, maybe if you looked at the answer to the same question which you posted in the sound forum...
