    Default Direction Needed

    Hi All,

I am a complete newbie to this so please bare with me. I am in the process of setting up a production company which i hope to take into the adult entertainment market. I am based in the uk and have no experience in this field. This you may think is a dream or a stupid idea however i have substantial business experience and have an idea for a project in mind and i believe i have found a niche. This is not your typical porn this will be more of a stylish educational video and i need to portray that, which means getting the right crew in place from inception. Now i am not going to give away to much on here but i am looking for some help with regard to the video/editing side of the project.

I am unsure as to standard costs for shooting/editing a film and need some help on this. I also need direction towards industry leaders in this field based in the uk. Does anyone know if there are companies out there that have this whole system in place and will develop your idea at a charge?

Please post any info you may have.

    Thanks.

All I would say about the pron market is that it is saturated and there aint nothnig new under the sun, so your ideal will nedd to be good and well ipmlimented.

Specifically production values in pron really are very high nowadays. It's generally shot with a full crew who have specific expirience in that field.

I am sure there is money to be made if you can get a distributor interested...

You're not wrong Mark. A zillion free video sites which if you can live with the pop ups will have you satisfied in a few minutes. (I should know).

Further, porn is porn. People looking want to have a quick one off the wrist and I seriously doubt there's a lucrative market in 'stylish educational' stuff.

I could be wrong. But my wrist often hurts....

On this forum we have a full-time professional who works in that field and someone who used to for a short time. Both will tell you that the hardest part of the adult-video industry is distribution. Making the stuff is easy, selling it is hard.

I work regularly for a production company which would gladly quote you to produce and edit your project... but they won't distribute it because, like many, many companies, they've had their fingers burnt trying to enter the adult market sector. If you can show that you have a distributor lined up, then you'll find people to develop your project If you're hoping to film it first and then try to sell it, you'd have to pay in advance!

As for industry leaders in the UK, I still have telephone and chatting contact with a few guys who made it in the field and can tell you now, they won't tell you anything! Times are hard in the business and contacts are worth their weight in gold. By all means PM me if you have a budget and a business plan and I'll happily quote you for the production, like I would for any serious businessman, but you won't find people flocking to your door if you only have "an idea for a project in mind and believe you have found a niche".

Two books you should read are "Once more with feeling" by Charlie Skelton and "Touch Wood: Confessions of an Accidental Porn Director" by Anonymous. Both are funny and yet give you a clue as to the type of personality you need to make it in the porn industry.

However, any questions you want to ask...feel free

    Hi All,

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated. I have actually found a company that can shoot, and produce this video for me. I understand fully that there are a thousand sites out there offering free videos for those looking for "quick relief", however as previously advised i believe I have something that people will be willing to purchase. Fingers crossed.

With regards to distribution many people have made substantial money from retailing themselves online with the right set up. Once a sales record can be proven from online sales these distribution companies will be more willing to commit to your product. This in turn should open up some large scale distribution chanels. Only time will tell though.

    Thanks again for your comments.

How not to become a Porn Producer.

I'm a relatively succesful lighting cameraman, done a couple of television dramas, a feature film, a fair few documentaries and a handful of porn films for a large porn factory. My mate Dave has directed a couple of films, produced a few documentaries and can sell ice to eskimos and sand to the arabs. So, a few years ago we decided to make our own porn videos. I mean, it can't be all that difficult can it?

The first thing I did was pick the brains of my contacts. Surprisingly, they were very forthcoming because (a) they'd known me for years and (b) they knew just how hard it is to break into the profit-making adult entertainment arena. (Note the use of the words profit-making).

The result was a list, the Three Commandments of Producing. They relate to all productions but especially to porn. We coined the word "Pornducing" to mean producing adult videos.

    1. Produce the video you would want to see.
    2. Be honest with yourself.
    3. Commit yourself 100%

Seems simple doesn't it? Yet the old sweats in the industry gave this advice freely and without reservations of any kind because they knew that 99% of aspiring Pornducers wouldn't be able to keep to them!

Point 1. The temptation is to try and anticipate what the public want. You can do this once you've sussed out the market, have a distributor and a few successes under you belt but not with your first few videos. Make a video for yourself. Decide what you would want to see then film it and edit it so that you are satisfied with the result. Move on to rule 2 and apply it, then go back to rule 1 again. This is the hardest part. This is where the temptation to double-guess creeps in. You may fancy thirtysomething chunky women but are doubtful that the rest of the world agrees so you go for anorexic silicon blondes. Mistake number 1, you're trying to guess what others want instead of making the film that you want. It doesn't matter how strange your preferences, you are not alone! Watersports, pain, humiliation, caviar, smoking, feet, there are all sorts of fetishes and a market for the videos. If, however you are into kids or suchlike, then don't go down that road but seek therapy, if you do young-porn you will end up in prison or in hospital, and rightly so.

    3. There is a saying "either piss, or get off the pot" and it applies to adult videos in particular. This is not the sort of thing you can do half-heartedly if you want to make money. You will need to follow the whole processes through with a terrier-like determination.

What about our venture...? Well, we ignored rule 1, paid lip-service to rule 2 and so our application of rule 3 came to nought. It cost us a few grand, a lot of sleepless nights, relationships and a handful of friends. We recouped a few pounds here and there but, generally speaking, it was an expensive lesson which I pass on for free, secure in the knowledge that any aspiring Pornducers will read this tale and think... "Ah but it won't happen to me..."
