Thread: help getting new system

    Default help getting new system

wanting to build a new but I'm kinda stuck.. so looking for ideas

programs used: premiere, after effects, edius (and to a small degree photoshop and 3dmax)

    - proc: q9300 (or q9550 haven't decided)
    - ram: what would work better 1066 CL5 or 800 CL4 ? going for 4gb, but 2gb initial and then upgrade in couple of months is doable as well...
    - video: hoping for some ideas what would be the least expensive card for this ? (do i need 512mb of vram ?)
    - mobo: no idea, but in the value segment
    - hdd: now this is the tricky part... any advice would be nice
    - how great is the importance of separate os/app hdds ?
    - i was thinking of raid-ing one drive (either with onboard controller, or with a 'value' one) would this affect cpu usage too much ?
    - currently i'm thinking 2hdd setup: samsung 250 f1 series for os and app and samsung 750 f1 for capture

system will not be used 24/7 and kinda short on cash, so small sacrifices can be made here and there

    any feedback would be appreciated

Processor - get the fastest you can.
Ram - get what is advised to avoid bottleneccks with the cpu you choose.
    Video card - irrelevant.
    Mobo - dunno.
Hdd - one or more biggies for video - 7200rpm is fine, sep fast drive for sys and apps.
Sep drives - very, speeds renders and system responiveness.
Raid - you cant raid one drive. Is a cool idea but use safe raid not fast raid ( actually less safe).
Raid controllers - DONT use a software raid soloution - hits cpu hard - best to get on mobo.

ok, how can i find this out ?

    my choice exactly
Hdd - one or more biggies for video - 7200rpm is fine, sep fast drive for sys and apps.
this will be the problem, i don't think i can get 3 hdds, unless i change the cpu from q9300 to q6600... what would be worst ? q6600 or 2 drives ?
Sep drives - very, speeds renders and system responsiveness.
noted. same question as above, does it worth sacrificing cpu power for separate hdd ? (i tend to believe so, but I'm not sure)
Raid - you cant raid one drive. Is a cool idea but use safe raid not fast raid ( actually less safe).
ok, i meant 1 partition (capture drive = 2x750gb samsungs), but i suffered a budget cut, so this is obsolete
Raid controllers - DONT use a software raid soloution - hits cpu hard - best to get on mobo.
never even thought of a software raid... but the difference between an onboard raid and a dedicated raid card (but this question is obsolete, see response above)

thanx for the reply... and awaiting the reply
