Default aargh! problem rendering 16:9 widescreen

    Hi
I've just downloaded the Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0 demo and I'm loving it, except for this one problem.

I have recorded footage on my camcorder in 16:9 then captured it as an AVI.

After playing about with it when I then went to render as a wmv file the output is not 16:9.

I have picked every option I can see for PAL widescreen where possible, and when I render I have tried checking and unchecking the "stretch video...(do not letterbox) option. Checked, the 16:9 footage is stretched vertically (as I assumed it would be), unchecked it is in the correct ratio, but the file has letterboxes above and below.

Have I misunderstood something or should I not be able to get a wmv that is 16:9 but does not have these letterboxes above and below? Simply a file that has the 16:9 ratio (not faking it by adding letterboxes)? I rendered to AVI and that is exactly how I want it. Are all wmv files set to this particular ratio?

The reason I ask is that the flash transition "flashes" the whole screen, including the letterboxes...not just the 16:9 content, which looks awful I think. Plus it just bugs me having the letterboxes

I have two example wmv files (both about 100KB) with the "stretch" option checked and unchecked :

And just to repeat, when I render as AVI without stretch but changing no other settings, the rendered file is just what I am after. So this makes me think it is a wmv specific problem rather than options I've picked for the project?

    Thanks for any help...

(sorry for the lengthy post )

    Cheers
    Duncan

    Hi
sorry - just realised that host doesn't support hotlinking of any sort, so have edited the post. if you go to Index of /media the two files are there.

For the start settings I chose European PAL, stereo and "not sure yet" as my output setting.

    Can anyone help?

You need to tell the player that the Pixels are not square.
My "cheat" is to render as wmv and then clik Custom (next to the template)
I then click on the "Video" tab and change the pixel aspect ration to "High Definition (1.33:1)"
    OR
keep the pixels square and change the no of pixels
On the same tab as above under "Image Size" Select "custom"
    Then enter the width/height in the proportion 16:9 (eg 1052 x 576)

ahh, cool thanks i will try that.

Seems a bit odd that you need to "fool" it. Windows movie maker automatically renders it in the same aspect ratio for you by default.

but cheers - will definitely have a fiddle with that

If that's the case, I suggest you render an avi from within Vegas and then use WMM to create the wmv from that. I can't guarantee my method is correct or will always work!

yeah that second option worked well! just got my calculator out to work out the 16:9 into 720:X

so changing it to 720:408 seems to work well.

    thanks again for your help!
