Default Vegas crashing after drive change

Hi all, I am at my wits end.

I suffered a drive failure recently on my editing machine, but using Linux managed to recover the files to another machine. I copied the files back to a new drive on my editing machine (being careful to keep the same drive letter / paths).

However, Vegas crashes with an access violation every time I open the projects. I know the files themselves are not corrupted because I can open the AVI clips and they are flawless.

Has anyone managed to fix this problem? Someone else had this issue at A problem I've ran into : Sony Vegas but this has not worked for me.

    Here is the crash debug:

    Sony Vegas 5.0
    Version 5.0d (Build 194)
    Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0x0 IP:0x0

If you mean you can open the avi clips in Vegas a new project, then there's a good chance that they are OK, as you say.

    Which leaves the project files.

Either they are corrupt or you've loaded a slightly different version of Vegas.
Or maybe you haven't reinstalled (the same version of) plug-ins that your project used.
Or maybe you had some presets/effects chains which no longer exist.
Have you any other projects which DO work?

    Nothing conclusive - just thoughts.

There are some older project files on the drive which do load. They are old and Vegas hunts for the missing files, but at least the project loads. Not my more recent projects which I'm working on!!

You may be correct about missing filters / presets / effects, how sad that Vegas would be so brittle - couldn't it just warn about missing FX?

I just tried installing a trial of Vegas 8 Pro. Not very Pro in that it crashed too.

In perhaps a last-ditch attempt to get this working, I have attached my project files and filters that are in the root of the Vegas 5.0 directory. If you can load them and save them again that might fix the file? I know it won't find the media.

Nope - sorry I got similar problems to you (Vegas 8.0b Pro).
I can only suggest you log an incident with Sony Creative Software
