    Default The Sony Firewire Problem

if you were looking for such a problem, then probably you are in deep sh***. i am a proud owner of a sony dsr-pdx10p and i'm very happy with it. it is great for shooting. and i have another cam wich is panasonic md9000 which i use to capture the movies i shoot. when it comes to plugging and unplugging, i'm very messy. still, i never had problems connecting the panasonic. but while using the sony for capturing, after a couple of uses, it seemed that the firewire jack got burned (i don't know how or why) but after lots of readings i found out that it is a common problem with sony, and it costs about 300$ to fix it.
it is very wierd that the sony guys don't care about this problem.
and if ur sony's firewire still works, be VERY CAREFUL, this is serious. i never believed that a firewire could actually "die" until mine got burned.

The problem with firewire ports on Sony's has come up before on the forum, I always believed a firewire port was a firewire port and they were all the same on whatever camcorder you had, but apparently that is not the case.

and the weird thing is that the panasonic i'm using is much "cheaper" and less pro than the sony... so it really confused me how such a problem occured on the sony and not otherwise...

    There's 2 kinds of firewire.

1 has 4 pins and the other is 6 pin. The 6 pin has two pins for power supply, the 4 pins are used for devices that have there own power.

You might have bought (or gotten) the wrong firewirecable and that may have caused the camera's port to burn. Or maybe with clumsy plugging shortcircuited it.

i guess u're right... n i've read alot about the subject...
but from my experience, none of my firewire self-powered hardware (camcorder, external harddisks...) failed... but the sony did...
i'm a big "fan" of sony, but right now i'm kind of disappointed...
