You can adjust volume from the fixed effects dialog. The volume control is keyframeable.
Select your audio track, then press the key frame button and select show clip volume. (If you want to adjust the volume of the whole movie select track volume.

I am guessing that tong said it better above but to the left of the clip just next to where you can silence or turn off layers there is a little triangle that is probably pointing right - click it and it will point down expanding the layer and showing you the waves and the rubber bands.![]()
