    Default Camcorder tape problems.

Hi, I have an old-ish Canon MV700 Camcorder. And till recently its been fine. However, all of a sudden it is refusing MiniDV tapes. When i put a tape into the tape compartment , it wont even take i into the camcorder, i press the tape down, it sits there for a while and pops back up. If there is no tape the compartment will retract back into the camera with no problems. Can anyone help?

Sounds like a fault with the spooling mechanism. Probably an uneconomic repair. Sorry.

Cheaper to buy a new camcorder instead of trying to get it fixed.

Well, If i can find out WHAT the problem is i could repair it my self, but the problem is that i cant find what the problem IS, the spool is fine, its only the Tape compartment will wont retract back into the camera were the rest of the components are, but this only happens when there is a tape in it.

I had the same issue recently with a mv850i. Seems a common issue with canon cameras around this model & age.

A few ideas i found were:
Operate the tape carrier in & out without a tape a few times. This didnt work.

Leave the carrier open without tape & with camera on for 10-30 mins to reset the mechanism. This didnt work.

Close the carrier without a tape, shut the lcd & give the camera a whack on the lcd side with palm of hand. This worked!

More than likely the locking mechanism on the tape compartment isn't working properly anymore. Or not as good as it used to, giving the camcorder a good slap (Ray Winston style) might engage it again for a while but won't solve the problem.
