Default Need help with a chroma key technique...

    Hi,

I'm relatively new to chroma keying and the myriad of software products available to make use of it.

I have been trying to figure out the method used to create a composite using two scenes:

Scene 1 is a subject filmed on a green screen.

Scene 2 is stock footage of a room with some people in the foreground and some others in the background.

I want to key in the subject from scene 1 BUT have that subject appear as if he is in the middle-ground of scene 2. ie. the foreground subjects mask the keyed in subject and the keyed in subject masks the background subject.

Can this be done? Is there a generalized method of doing this? What software provides the best way to do this?

I hope my question makes sense.

    Any help?

    Thanks!

The answer is 'Not Easily I'm afraid!'

Video compositting is like both ogres and onions... made up of layers. You want to put your video layer between elements in a single layer. That is not a natural thing for any piece of compositting s/w to do.

Now if you 'background' layer is not actually a single layer and most 'virtual sets' come in a layered fashion for exactly this purpose (think newscaster sitting behind a desk) then you have every chance of getting it right.

If all you have is a single video layer then you are into rotoscoping the entire footage. i.e. visit each frame by hand and mask areas out to give the effect of the three layers you want. Gonna take ages, sorry.
