Default Viewing Digital8 on pc monitor

I've got an old sony digital 8 DCR-TRV355E and am in the process of replacing my pc and monitor. New pc to be ordered has firewire (so that I can transfer to DVD)and VGA/DVI port but I'm not clear if the monitor also needs DVI for me to be able to watch the old tapes. Or is DVI on the monitor for something else such as digital TV?

Bit confused - grateful for any help.

You don't need DVI on the monitor. Just transfer the footage from your CAM via the firewire connection and everything will be fine.

    Good luck

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I'd be interested to know what DVI is for on a monitor if you could advise?
