Default Western digital drives - avoid!

BBC NEWS | Technology | 'Digital locks' future questioned

I find it amazing that WD have decided to cripple thier drives in this way.

It appeares that this feature is only active on 'networked drives' - not sure exactly what that means in practice but I will not be buying WD drives from now on.

What makes you think WD is the only manufacturer who does that? Maybe it's just the only one who goes public.

To avoid confusion, this is a software issue, not a hardware one. WD drives do not limit file sharing, but the software used to share files over the internet from a specific piece of network hardware by WD does.

In summary, WD harddrives do not have DRM, but software bundled with a network drive from WD does.

So... one would have to ask.... Why in the hell would anyone install the software?
