Default New Year's Resolutions - Must Post More on VEF?

Well, the site's (www.marcpeters.co.uk) been up and running for a few years now, and it's gradually grown into a (reasonably!) informative site, but the forums have yet to "take off". So... what can I do to foster more of a "community"? What can I do to get you guys that visit and maybe register to post more than once?

What's the site missing? How can I improve it? Please post more

i'm buggered if i can remember how i found it (i THINK i was looking for camera reviews) so i can't help on that aspect, but i think we just need to tell people about it.

a lot of people come here to get a question answered, and it gets fixed, and they never visit again. we need to keep people here, and build a community.

i like the idea about having forums where we can meet others who're interested in making films, and get together and make something. anything.

Yer, I'd like the forums to be a bit more than just us answering people's problems. I'll have a think about how I can get more people here that are interested in video editing/film making rather than looking for solutions...

I've added a "last ten posts" to www.marcpeters.co.uk/guides.html which seems to be driving more people to the site (which will hopefully mean at least a few more people stick around!)

I've also ammended a mod to the forums to make the URLs google friendly - after checking, I found the last one had been applied incorrectly and googlebot couldn't even see my site let alone index it. So hopefully within a few weeks, some of the threads will be indexed.

On another note, if anyone has a website, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful for a link to www.marcpeters.co.uk and/or www.videoeditingforums.co.uk. Backward links = prizes in google

Anyway, we've had more "guests" than usual since the changes, so I hope this is the start of bigger and better things...

Being a newbie here and to video, I can only share that i found the site through google, search criteria was Video Editing Forums. and I clicked on the first link I saw. Funny earlier though I mentioned as i am learning Premiere, I had found a site by criteria Premiere tutorial, and the place I spoke of just happens to be this same site. If anything Google is working for you and i am glad. What I do know is that as I am exploring through premiere, I am going tohave LOTS of questions, and will be posting a lot of them, hopefully in the right area. I for one like forums, a place to trade ideas and problems, and know they are worth their weight in gold, as I learned with a Forum for Musical Instrument making.
Forums go through transitions too, as people change and their interests with that, a forum will be busy for a while and then get real slow, then back to busy. Holidays help as people get new toys to play with (Like me) and some will become regular participants. I am hoping to be a regular here, experiment and share too, as well as learn a lot. Since the technology is leaning more and more to home movie making I have a hunch that this will be a lively place in the future. You already have a few good ppl here contributing and that is a good start for sure. Forums grow slow in the beginning though. So I really think that it is now that the big hour is about to begin
I tip my hat to you Marc for this place, many thanks.

Cheers mate. The site's optimised for "Video Editing Forums", but it's not actually that popular a key word (you wouldn't believe the obscure search terms that are most popular at the other site).

It must be hard to attract people here and even harder to keep them here. The subject appeals to a specialised crowd I guess although there's a lot involved in 'video editing' that is useful to those who don't necisarilly want to edit video, encoding for example. I suppose the most practical way to attract people is through getting links out there and having something here for people to attract them. Your homepage already suffices as that really though.

I've always wanted to set up a similar kind of site/forum for music/sound production. One thing I thought might attract people was a showcase, where people can upload their works and have them hosted for others to see. But then this costs b/w (money!). There's always competition too.

Spread the word I think is the best practical option. I like this place and would like to learn and help out where I can. My college (I'm doing 'Media Moving Image') has a 'VLE' site which is used for student collaboration, hosting of assignment briefs, course bulletins etc. You can send emails to all users so I'll send them all a link to the site. Being academic filmakers other course members might find the forum useful and come here to help out too.

I've customised the forums a bit to make them look more like the main site... bound to be some bugs somewhere though, so if anyone spots something that look odd, please tell me!!!
