Default editing AVI in Premiere Pro

Hi there - need a little help here.
I need to edit a few videos I took on my digital camera (fuji) which are in .avi format on Premiere Pro

1 I tried importing them but it gives me an error ' unsupported type' so
2 I downloaded WinMPG converter - the files would import but I get that huge txt on the upper and lower part of th screen... I know this wouldnt be the case if I 'paid' for the registered version.
Also using the converter means my entire timeline has to render with every change, which is a real pain!

is there anyway to get around this -
can i edit on premiere without having to convert?
or is there a free converter?

any help would be really appreciated - thanks, Lendl

What you need to do is to capture first you videos from your camera. Just hit F5 and the capturing video will come. Then after connecting your camera press a red mark and start to capture. Don't use other software to capture because some softwares are not compatible with Premiere and when trying to import them it can be hard to accept them. I am using Premiere 2.0 and its a good software.

MMEWASWIDA - can Premiere capture from a digital camera? Not sure, as I've never tried it. I've had the same trouble described here, and I've only found a way around it by using external software. You'll just have to search (try downloads.com) for a free trial program with no watermark (read the product descriptions first to confirm), and make files the PP 2.0 will accept. Hope this helps.
