Default virtualdub ruining aspect ratio mpeg2

I know what you're thinking - virtualdub doesn't support mpeg2. I've actually only just read that. However... I was following instruction under this thread which describes my problem exactly! So now I have a version of Virtualdub that opens my mpegs, but now it screws the aspect ratio instead. The only reason I'm using virtualdub is because I've been told it will convert my video to an editable format. I assume all video editing software needs this (or should have, for better results) not just premiere. Any help would be appreciated!

What format are you trying to convert to? Uncompressed AVI? Or are you trying to encode?

Uncomperssed AVI, yes. I'm not trying to encode, no.
