Strange File!

A friend has downloaded a Film (which apperently he paid for!)

However it is in file format called mkv file. Does anyone know what this file is and how to get it to play, if at all?

Sureley there is a FAQ on the web site he downloaded (and paid for) it from that would explain this. Possibly some proprietary s/w from the web site to use??

I asked him the same thing, aparently not.........hmmmm strange

Has he actually tried playing it? could be just that someone's put a funky extension to an AVI?

Thanks guys.

Hes downloaded a program called VLC media player. It claims to play every media file around, now im not sure about every file but it certainly plays mkv files!
