Default How to convert from DV type 1 to wmv or other?

I captured a video from my camcorder in DV type 1 and for a 7 minute video the file size is 1.5 Gb. To what type of format should I compress it and where can I get the software in order to bring it down to a reasonable size?

I receive videos via the internet in wmv or mpeg and they are in 10 mb range for a few minutes of video. Thanks.

Windows Movie Maker might do it. Included with XP.

Experiment with the various export settings until you have a filesize / quality that you are happy with.

Or use Windows Media Encoder, via Google. It's free.

Both methods produce WMV-format files. They will play on 99% of Windows PC's without any codec compatibility issues.

Thank you bert6280. I checked Windows Media Encoder but it is not compatible with Window98 which is what I have. Instead, I downloaded Kate's Video converter from CNET. I converted 30 seconds of the video to wmv. File size was less than 1 Mb (or 100 to 1 ratio), however the screen was much smaller. When I went to full screen I noticed a loss of sharpness. I suppose this is normal.

    Thank you for your input.

    Wow - Windows 98 - I remember that...

I'm not familiar with Kate's converter, but compression is invariably at the expense of quality.

You may have the option in Kate's converter to adjust the resolution settings of the output file. Changing them to match the original settings will result in a bigger and sharper video, albeit with an increased file size.

Thank you bert6280. Kate's converter has an advanced option of resizing video
(?x? pixels). I tried it but it did not work. I shall write their technical support. Thank you.
