Default Problem loading .avi files in Sony Vegas 4.0 (divx codec)

    Hi there.

I'm having a problem with my Sony Vegas and I would like to ask for assistance. I'm currently using Sony Vegas 4.0, and everything have been fine until I downloaded some new videos which uses the divx codec and it is an avi file. I have no problem reading the file with Windows Media Player 10 and other programs but when I drop it on Sony Vegas, it loads both the video and audio but only the audio can be heard. As for the video, a video track appear but there are no images on it and I can only see black.

I tried using Windows Movie Maker and they have no problem reading the file, though I would prefer not to use WMM to edit the file cause I find Sony Vegas to be much more efficient and have more functions.

Also, my Sony Vegas always have problem dealing with avi files and this is not the first time this happens. It shows box saying that the file is corrupted or similar messages but when I play it with WMP and others, it turns out fine.

So can anyone suggest a way to remedy this problem?

    Thanks in advance ^_^

divx is unstable , because of that vegas dose not like them, use virtualdub (free) to convert to another format.

Yes - some divx edit fine - others do weird things - as suggested conversion should sort things.

I convert most odd formats to dv as these are smooth to edit.

    Thanks for the help.

I took your advice and downloaded VirtualDub 1.6.19. I tried to convert the files by saving them into .avi files, and the quality of the video came out even better. Sony Vegas is willing to work with the new files that have been converted, so that's settled. But unfortunately, the size of the file increased as well, an average 3 min file ended up 3GB.

Is there anyway I can reduce the size with this program while maintaining the quality of the original file?

Thanks again for your help. ^_^

It all depends on the bitrate you choose
