Question fade out picture but not broken glass in frame? imbedded trackmatte?

hi all, pardon the flood of questions, but this forum is great, and as u know nepal is a poor underdeveloped country without much of anything, particulary tutorials

here is the storyboard (footage will be live video):

what I want to do is fade out the picture in the frame but not fade out the cracks in the glass, so the picture looks like it has faded to nothing recognizable but a washed out photo.

i think i know how to create the dissolving photo sequence, but i not sure how to place it in the frame, which is already trackmatted to show the sequence inside the frame. do i overlay another video of cracked glass on top of that?
    thx...

Put the cracked glass on it's own layer. It is quite easy to create in photoshop or another image program and save it out as a format with transparency.

or Draw the cracks on in after effects and then extrude it slightly to give it a small amount of depth so it looks 3d.
