    Question Software and format advice

I want to learn the basics of editing video and don't know much about the subject.

I do have an Acer laptop (Intel Duo Core, 100 GB).

A friend will give me some footage to play with but I have no idea what format or software I need.

    Thanks

How much memory does your laptop has? (1gig recommended) You should buy an external capturedisk, the 100Gb disk from your laptop does not suffice as it's not a good idea having your programs and videofootage on the same disk for performance reasons, also a laptop disk runs at 5400rpm which is not reccomended for editting and 100gig is a bit too small. So you need at least a 160gig ext drive connected with firewire.
If you r new to editting, buy somthing like Magix videodeluxe or premiere elements. Especially videodeluxe doesn't have a steep learningcurve.
Type of camera is also important, then we come to the "format" because you mainly have sd, hdv, harddisk and dvd camcorders. Personally I would recommend a sd camera with mini dv cassettes when you have never used a camera before. Hdv, harddisk and dvd recorders often raise problems with beginners because they have issues editing it. Sd cams is idiot proof, just capture which becomes a 'avi' file and edit without a hassle.
