Thread: LP's to CD & Mini disc

Default LP's to CD & Mini disc

I have just upgraded my audio system. I'm old enough to have lots of old LP's which I raid for background music. My Turntable hooked into my new digital tuner amp has a loud mains 50 cycle hum.
I remember advice to provide a common earth between the turntable and amp to suppress this. My problem is that the Turntable mains lead is only 2 core (no earth wire). Any suggestions as to where on turntable chassis or pick up arm I connect to provide a common earth and hopefully get rid of the hum. It was virtually inaudible through the old (20 yrs tuner amp).
    Thanks Jim j

There is normally a thumbwheel connector both on amp and turntable to connect the lead to. Most amps that have a turntable ('Phono') input have the earth connector, but not all. I have previously loosened a screw on the cover (assuming it is metal) and attached there and the same on the turntable. Failing an external place to attach, you'll need to take it to bits and locate to the chassis.

When i was a hi fi nut I had a special turntable earth that was a copper pipe baged into the dirt - and i had a dedicated mains spur for the amps - but that was all going a bit far in retrospect - as TM says there should be a small earth screw on the amp, or try a chassis screw. These earth hums can be a nightmare sometimes...
