Default why does every thing have to be on youtube ?

It would be nice if someone could just post a link of a homepage ending in
    avi,mpg, rm, or mov

Your film gets potential larger audiences than if you just host it on your own website. When you spend plenty of time creating your film, you want it to be seen and have as much exposure as possible. Youtube has search features, allows people to give feedback and rate your video which can be useful to you. Plus, youtube handles the streaming and bandwith for you, saving money from using your own websites bandwith and cost of streaming features you may need.

Similar sites more dedicated to the serious film maker such as www.pawky.com also gives you a community of film makers to be a part of. Of course, having your own website with your video downloads is good too.

Alex is very right about the advantages of Youtube. But if you want to make an income from your work and output, then hosting somewhere yourself is the answer . . of course, you then have to market, promote and otherwise generate interest in what you do, which can be a right pain!
I try to make someone happy every day - but it may not be your turn today . . .

I dont like you tube much. You tube is really a huge collection of crap produced by fools with the odd gem drowning in all the shit.

I think good videos deserve a good presentation.

My web site has been going three years. I get about 100 visitors a day with my top films getting 300 ish views a month, occasionally lots more.

I am very happy with this and enjoy having my pwn site. You tube is for throw away crap only - on my site I have crap too, my own crap presented in my own way.

Dont foraget you give up all rights by posting on u tube too.

Another reason i dont like it is that it rarely streams for me in real time for me.
