Thread: Will a good Graphic Card make a difference?

Default Will a good Graphic Card make a difference?

I use the PC to do some Video Editing mainly using Pinnacle. I normally download from my Sony Mini DV (TVR900E) and cut DVDs. I am looking to replace my P4 1.3 with a Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 (or 6400), 2 Gig Ram,..My main query is if it will make any difference to buy an expensive Card like ATI 1900XT ViVo? I am not into games and apart video editing it's just web & normal applications. My current P4 is a real pain when it comes to rendering a 1hr DVD which might sometimes take 12-24hrs. Any comments will be appreciated - would you also recommend HD in Raid? Thanks

I don't use Pinnacle, but if it's anything like Vegas etc, then a vid card wont do diddly squat, save your money and put in more ram or a bigger CPU.

agreed - by all means get a good gfx card - a 256mb...... but dont bother going for some crazy hi-end card cos they are mainly designed for gamers. money would be better spent on other stuff like ram although you already have 2gb!

Not sure what your budget is, but this Asus motherboard is solid. I have the Deluxe version, but I know others that have this model and it works well.

Not sure on the harddrive, anything Seagate is usually the way I go (good warranty, quite).

I have a 37 gig raptor 10000rpm for the system drive and i am sure it makes the pc smoother.

I have recently got very paranoid about drive failures / losing data / video. I now back stuff up using my old ide drives from my previous pc using a caddy so I can swap the drives and store them elsewhere in cae i am robbed... told you i am paranoid.

I am also considering a raid array in my pc, the safe kind, for further peace of mind. Maybe you could considor that, it does mean installing 2 drives and only getting the capacity of one.

Not an expert here by any means so take this with a pinch of salt...

Si Soft sandra tells me my core duo (same as above) is memory bandwidth limited with the same speed ram as you mention. Maybe the 800mhz flavour would give a usefull perf increase ? I didnt get it cos of cost.

Maybe you should check with someone who might know...

Mark, is it the Memory RAM you're asking me to upgrade?

I'm trying to future proof myself as my P4 lasted me for 6yrs (Had a few Component Upgrades which were expensive)
