I read about the emergence of dual layer DVD writables in a technology focus of upcoming technologies a wee while ago. Not sure it will impact too much on the home movie front, but I can see it having a significant impact on the DVD piracy issue. Until now the main obstacle was converting a dual layered disc (DVD9?) to fit on a single layer writable. With enough space, it would just be a matter of decrpting and burning the vobs. Not sure that's something the film industry will be pleased about - expect to see some new form of copyright protection soon.

I can just imagine the deluge of queries along the lines of "my DVD authroing app won't let me burn to a dual layered disc". Or, "what's the difference between single and dual layered?"

    Or possibly of more interest...

"How do I control where in my movie I place the layer transition?"

With regard to that. I'm not conscious of noticing the preverbally layer transition on a DVD movie for ages. Do modern players still pause slightly. Anyone noticed it lately? Maybe the problem has gone away with a little extra caching eh?

Me too. It seemed very prominent on older DVDs...

I get a couple of seconds of black during layer transition with my modern but cheap Phillips DVD player. I dont find it too distracting. How do players get around this issue, do they have buffers?
