Thread: Video editing software for me as a beginner?

  1. Default Video editing software for me as a beginner?

I've never used any editing software before. I'm just about to get a bullet camera to capture all my track day action. What is the most user friendly software to use? (preferably free!) I want to be able to transfer from my Mini DV and be able to crop clips together, add music, titles & comments. I may also want to add another camera view into the corner of the screen (rear facing etc) I also assume I'll need to be able to compress the files.

    Any help / advice appreciated.

Got XP? Then you have all you really need, moviemaker.

Having said that the bug may bite, in that case there are plenty of 'value' editors, stripped down versions of more pro software.

Chechout some free trials here :

I believe Mark was referring to Avid FreeDV. You can get it from here: www.avid.com/freedv/
But you'll have a lot to learn. Better to stick with WMM for starters.

I was looking at WMM last night and it looks fairly simple. 2 questions on it though -

    - When importing from my Mini DV Camcorder can WMM compress the file?

    - Is it possible to insert another camera view within the main view (main view front facing camera with smaller rear view camera in corner for example)

    Thanks

    1. Yes, you can, but the only compressed format available in Windows Media Video. Not DVD compliant. Better to leave it DV and encode to MPEG-2 using TMPGEnc or something.
    2. No. For that, you would need a multitrack editor. So WMM and Pinnacle Studio (standard ver) are out of question.

    Excellent. Thanks for your help.

I take it I'll need to get proficient with WMM before I got to a multi track editor?

I suppose it depends if you like steep learning curves or not.

I went straight for vegas because I was familiar with a similar piece of audio software and already had a grasp of different file formats and stuff.

To be honest I never really got to grips with wmm and even now I find it quite fiddly to use compared to vegas. Try some of the free trial versions of editors and see what you think.
