Default Where do I start?

Hi all,
I really want to start making my own home videos but to be honest I have no idea where to start!

What I would really like to know is the main steps in production, i.e what do you do first? What are the most common & logical proceedures to take? Do I just start shooting and then edit?

Also if anyone knows where I can find a good "beginners" camcorder that would be helpful too!

p.s Sorry if this is the wrong forum, please let me know if it is!
p.p.s Sorry if this is too big a question for a post!

Many thanks for your help
NB

Look at some of the other posts on this forum as they provide plenty of help to get you started and if you are still stuck, post again under one of the more appropriate categories as this is just for posting guides and tips that people already have and may be missed by people who could help you.

Alright heres a few tips:
When making a video planning comes first, then shooting, then filming.
I would recommend Windows Movie Maker as a beginner and advanced video editing software. It is free, has a very user friendly interface, can overlay, can make your own custom effects/transitions, can do all things you need to when making a movie.
As far as choosing a camcorder. I would recommend one with a hard Drive that way there's no hassle with discs or tapes -just one cord into the PC.
Hope I helped.

As far as editing goes, I have to disagree with the previous poster. Solid state and DVD camcorders are not suitable for editing.
