Nonlinear Video Editing

I am trying to make a video compilation of an anime with my favorite song (I assure you I am not 12 years old). I am a blank slate; I know nothing about video editing yet, but recently downloaded VirtualDub and VDMod and I have Windows Movie Maker. Do any of the pros have any suggestions / reviews / links to guides about my specific situation?

Incidentally (others may have this same question), does anyone know if it is easier to edit matroska files over avi?
