This guide assumes you are not using copyrighted material - as you should know on this forum we do not condone such activities.
1) digitise / capture the footage on to your system.
With some editing packages you can sometimes copy the Video_ts folder into a folder on your system then rag the individual vob files on to the timeline but this does not work all the time. The full proof way is to link your DVD player up to your computers capture card - this way you can also select the specific sections you require.
2) Edit the captured scenes.
Use your favourite editing package to edit the captured material how you want them. You can either create one long movie of the scenes or reate separate movies depending on what you require in your final DVD.
3) Encoding / Rendering.
At this point you will have a movie or movies ready and edited but they now need to be converted to a format that can be used for DVD. DVD's use MPEG2. You will use your edit application to do this. Most of them have presets to suit your region/location and needs eg: Pal Widescreen. Depending on any treatment of the footage, length of the program, and power of your system this can be very time-consuming. It is the one proecess with video work that is most irritating but you gotta bight the bullet and wait. It is recommended that you render a 5 second section usually in the middle to test your render settings.
4) Authoring.
Here you will need to use a DVD authoring application. This is where you create a menu structure for your final dvd. It basically acts as a Map for a DVD player so that the player knows what movie is what and where it is on the disc. The menu system is the visual interface that a user will see on screen. Without this process you cannot watch the DVD. Diffrent DVD applications differ greatly in how they work - the best thing to do is find one and then find a tutorial but most of the come with a guide on how to do all this.
5) Prepare/Finalise.
This is the penultimate process. You DVD application will give you the option of finalising or preparing the disc either straight to a Disc or to a local folder. I recommend that you do it to a local folder as it gives more control on how you burn your discs. This ties all the assets together and creates your Audio_ts & video_ts folders.
6) Burn
The final process. - Here you can use any cd/dvd bruning tool to burn the final disc. Copy the Audio_ts and video_ts folders onto the root of the disc and burn. If the burning application you are using has a DVD movie disc preset then use that. At the end of this you should have a dvd that will play in a dvd player.
Notes: There are many many diffrent ways of doing this. I have given a rough, simplified guide. You will need to decide on the software you use. Most PC's come with software to do this or you can go and purchase your own. Once you have decided on whjat you will use you should play around with it to learn it. Search this site for tips on them and you can also search google for tutorials also. Basically what i'm saying is try and figure it out on your own first. This is key to learning.
