All as for recording, your bitrate is only as good as your sound care and software, Using a nice Audigy u can get 96000khrz which is better then cd's or Dvd's.
But its still better to have some sort of digital interface which maps the recording channels differently. Basicly like having several Sound cards in 1. so it can record diff inputs into diff tracks at the same time.

I use Goldwave. Good stable package that has many filters, even programable ones. Only downside is doesn't do mixing.
I use Magix MEP 10's surround sound mixer for that.

I use soundforge as a final tuner but I don't think that you can beat the quality of a stand alone digital multitracker. I use one for the following reasons;
1. They are astonishingly easy to use and you can rig up more than one microphone at once providing a more balanced recording
2. They are very cheap secondhand. I use a Fostex VF-08 which has onboard compression and full production capability. There are many different makes but I think that the Fostex, Tascam (Teac) and Yamaha ranges are the best. If I want to I can rig through a sound desk and mike up a whole band.
3. Good ones will use XLR balanced jacks for high quality mics and excellent recording quality
4. Good ones will include some sort of SMPTE sync capability although I have never used this.
5. They are portable (albeit plugged into a socket somewhere)
I recommend that you go onto Ebay and see what's about but you can go to any secondhand musical instrument store and they will have some for sale.
I believe that the standards required in the music industry (these little machines are generally semi pro) are far higher than required in our field and I have never achieved what I would regard as good quality on my PC as I do on my digital multitracker.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying but what I'm looking for is a multi-track software where I can mix'n'match a few tracks before saving it (as wav) or importing it into Premiere.
The choice seems to have narrowed down to Adobe Audition or SoundForge 7 or 8 (my version is ancient and showing its age, only has two tracks for a start).
Anyone know where I can get cheap (but NOT demo) versions of these? There must be places where you can get older full versions.

Sorry to chip in late. In a pro edit suiet they would probily use digi designs pro tools. Steinbergs Wave lab is another good peice. Otherwise I would stick with sony sound forge. I have never played with audition but I think its ment to be good. I think alans the man for audition.

Thanks Luke, in the end I tried a few different sofwares and then decided to stick with my (old and basic) version of Sound Forge and save up for an Audition.
